This was just 2 pints ham stock, stored in the freezer from the Xmas ham, with a packet, 450g, red lentils added, plus 1 onion and 3 carrots, 2 bay leaves and a few celery sticks - the whole lot simmered 30 mins or so, blended and then some extra seasoning, including that magic one for soups, marmite and bingo - a meal in the bowl. We also had some left over ham frozen so that went in, shredded, but that in fact wasn't popular. Opinion had it that it was entirely unnecessary. You could use veg stock, and increase the veg additions for flavour but ham and lentils do have an affinity.
There was a TV programme about dieting that I saw bits of, which proved scientifically that soup stays in your stomach longer than other food and therefore defeats hunger pangs for longer. So, if January means dieting as well as comfort for you, soup it shall be.
